DECEMBER 2009

Goodbye 2009.

What a year it was. While the last decade saw the rapid expansion of the international art economy, the fall of 2008 brought about a global economic recession that dealt a heavy blow to the previously red hot art world. Sale prices, artistic ambitions and commercial galleries that had been soaring for years came crashing down with a thud. Some galleries closed their doors for good, leaving artists and clients holding the bag.

Provincial arts funding in BC was slashed this year, leaving many scrambling to find the support they have previously relied on. But our arts community is a strong one, and continues to grow even through these trying times. Many organizations have launched campaigns to protest and draw public attention to these cuts, such as the Alliance for Arts and Culture’s ArtsCutsMemo project/contest, the Facebook group Organizing Against Campbell’s Cuts to the Arts or the Twitter account stopbcartscuts.

2010 will bring many changes for Vancouver, and Denbigh FAS as well.  Our storage facilities expanded this year with the addition of another 4000 square feet of climate controlled museum grade art storage. A textile manufacturing shop next to our main facility in Vancouver was gutted and renovated over the fall months to create this new space.  This area will also house our recently expanded framing shop. With these enhanced areas we hope to further our capabilities, and meet any and all of your fine art service needs.

Denbigh employees ended the year on a high note with a fantastic holiday party at Coast Restaurant in Vancouver. Much fun was had by all Denbighs and spouses in attendance, pictured on this page.
