MARCH 2010
Neo-Native Drawings and Other Works, by Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun
From March 19 to May 16, Vancouver’s Contemporary Art Gallery (555 Nelson St.) is showing “Neo-Native Drawings and Other Works” by acclaimed BC artist Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun.
Known for his large scale canvases depicting contemporary Indigenous history and identity, this is the first exhibition of Yuxweluptun’s work that focuses on his drawings on paper. Rich in detail, these smaller works have been referred to by Yuxweluptun as “preliminary studies”, “background works” or “measuring sticks” in which he develops the forms and figures seen in his larger works.
This excellent show features three decades of work from 1980 to 2009. Check it out and get a glimpse into the process of one of the most interesting and provocative artists working today. Guided visits are available at the Contemporary Art Gallery and admission is by donation with a suggested fee of $5.

Art Handling Olympics
In other completely unrelated art world news, Ramiken Crucible Gallery in New York recently played host to the first annual Art Handling Olympics. Teams from a number of New York based fine art services competed in events such as How’s It Hanging?, The Static Hold, Pack It In and the forebodingly named Eliminator.
Art handlers and preparators are the backbone of the art world and this was a great opportunity for people to get together and show off their skills while having a lot of fun.
Sunday, March 21 marked the opening ceremonies, a day of competitive events and a triumphant closing ceremony where the gold medal was awarded to a team called King of Cleats. All the best to them! Hopefully they recovered enough from their exertions to be at work on Monday. Here’s a link to the Art Handling Olympics website and links to other media about the event:
