SEPTEMBER 2010

There is always a bit of mystery and intrigue as well as a lot of discretion involved in moving major works of art from one venue to another.

Important exhibitions are well planned many years in advance of any opening of the show. The artworks on loan from one museum or art institution to another are very carefully chosen with many special considerations, not all of them being curatorial. Some institutions will not lend specific artworks due to their fragility and potential harm from handling, no matter how careful. Others are carefully wrapped and packed in custom built museum cases specially designed to meet the needs of a particular work of art.

The packed cases must then be carefully transported from one institution to another. This movement of artwork is again planned well in advance and the exhibition is transported on exclusive fine art trucks from one venue to another. The museum standards of dual drivers, air ride transport systems for road shock and a climate controlled environment for the cased artwork is mandatory. Other shipments which must be transported internationally require even further well organized and detailed itineraries to ensure proper handling.

The transport of many exhibitions are orchestrated through a network of fine art services all doing their part to assist in the careful handling and tracking of the artwork. One of the requirements of particular loans from museums or art collectors is to have a courier travel with the shipment to supervise the handling at different venues. Many exhibitions are delivered from a lending or borrowing museum in the middle of the night with a convoy of fine art transport trucks, security cars and couriers. Denbigh provides all of these services and has done a number of shuttles to and from the airport in a well planned entourage.

Denbigh not only assists couriers locally but provides courier services overseas as well.

This month, Denbigh assisted in the coordination of important returning artworks to Paris, France. As well, we flew to Paris to supervise the unpacking and installation of a major artwork on loan from a private collection. We worked with another fine art service in Paris to ensure the artwork was handled with the utmost care and attention.

Condition and progress reports are provided to the lending institutions or collector as the exhibition continues to travel. This comprehensive planning and monitoring of important artworks ensures the safety and preservation of work and satisfies the condition of loan from the museum or collector.

Denbigh offers transport services ranging from a simple local delivery of a painting across town to these kinds of complicated overseas transports with courier supervision — all with the professionalism you know you can trust from us.
